The Peace Prize Controversy
Average Reading Time: about 2 minutes.
I know, we’re not maintaining this blog much but there’s an issue that just has to be adressed:
The Nobel Peace Prize that President Obama recently was awarded.
He’s gotten a lot of flack over this, especially in the conservative media – he even himself stated that he doesn’t really think he deserves it. And he might be absolutely right, and it sure is a strange nomination and award.
But credit must be given to the Nobel comittee, because they’re not dumb. I believe their major reason for awarding Obama with the peace prize was for his quick actions in reaching out to the muslim world and initiating diplomatic negotiations – something the Bush administration actively refused, much to the detriment of the entire worlds stability. His speech in Kairo alone is applaudable.
Over at Salon.com there’s been a very interesting article written about Obamas work towards stability in the world so far. Much of what is written has never been mentioned in the general media, and one can argue that the democrats are pretty much worthless in reporting their own progress.
Some major important points both from that report and generally:
- The withdrawal of troops from Iraq are ahead of schedule. So far he has brought home 22,000 troops out of Iraq.
- He has cut war spending by $30 billion.
- Pakistan has as we speak today launched a major offensive towards the Taliban strongholds within their borders – as much as a response to the new US leadership as anything.
- He has managed to convince Iran to allow in UN inspections, as a result of direct negotiation.
- His effort towards dragging the US, kicking and screaming, toward a modern healthcare system (last country in the western hemisphere) could result in a much more stable and equal society.
- By dismantling the Bush plan of an aging missile defense system in eastern europe, he has opened up unforeseen diplomatic possibilities with Russia – apart from saving billions of dollars while at the same time planning a much more efficient defense plan in the area.
- His promises to close Guantanamo Bay and the administrations refusal to continue previous torture policies is a big move towards human rights in the world.
So give the guy some credit – and don’t listen to the major news outlets all the time. Obama is a force in the world most of us probably won’t acknowledge until years have passed and history can make its judgement. And so far, I honestly believe history will treat him as possibly one of the most important leaders of our time.
If we give him the chance.
[...] now quite a few places that are linking to this outdated post, I would like to direct you to also read this post with some of his newer [...]
BULL S
-That’s great if he’s actually bringing the troops home, but now there’s not enough troops to carry out their current missions.
-He cut war spending out of necessity to fund his stimulus and government expansion, which has led to QUADRUPLING the deficit. Saving 30 billion doesn’t seem like much when you realize he’s spent near 10 trillion.
-I don’t see how you can credit him for Pakistan’s decision to launch an offensive on the Taliban. It has more to do with the Taliban moving out of the tribal area’s and towards the urban area’s of Pakistan.
-Hopefully that is a result of his negotiations, I don’t know enough to comment on it other then to say I’m skeptical he really had anything to do with it.
-If by stable and equal society you mean socialism and the redistribution of wealth you’d be right on the money. Name ONE government ran industry that runs well.
-What’s his defense plan?
-It’s not a big move towards human rights in the world. It’s a bigger move towards hindering national security efforts. They also want to start affording AMERICAN rights to war criminals, the very same people who are out there threatening our rights and our ways of life.
So far I think he’ll be regarded as one of the worst leaders in the world. Time will tell, but to say give him a chance. He’s had a year and I haven’t seen him do anything right other than be a good public speaker. Here’s hoping he uses the remaining 75% of this term to do a better job.
Jason: Thanks for your comment!
- He inherited the enormous deficit, and you have to “spend money to earn money” as the saying goes.
- The US has closer negotiations with Pakistan now than ever before, and has put a lot of pressure on them for weeding out the Taliban.
- Medicare..? And “socialism” is just a slur word that most americans don’t know what it means. Universal healthcare is not “socialism” – or do you call every other country in the developed world socialist?
- His defense plan in eastern europe is to deploy smaller high tech missile defenses that actually do what they are supposed to, instead of massive military outposts which is what the russians objected to.
- Torturing human beings is never right. If anything, it seeds even more hatred and resentment ending in a bigger threat to national security. Terrorism is emotional, not rational.
-That’s the excuse every time. He inherited the deficit. But he inherited it at one quarter what it is now. That’s 400% less. I don’t understand why this president seems exempt from most critiques, anyone else would quickly be on the chopping block.
-Pakistan is more open to negotiations because they’re being attacked more aggressively. Now that’s not to say Obama isn’t trying to influence their decision, but crediting him for it is silly.
-Socialism isn’t a slur word that most Americans don’t know what it means. But that’s a common liberal stance, that we’re too ignorant and ill-equipped to handle things on our own and need the government to take care of us. And medicare has got to be one of the worst examples of a something ran well by the government. It runs so well that most seniors (9 out of 10) have to get supplements for their medicare. And boy they’re excited when they tell me about the hoops they jump through to get their coverage or if they need to speak with someone regarding a bill.
-Okay for one where are those prisoners going now? They haven’t gotten the okay to bring them to American soil … so do we just release them? They were captured fighting American soldiers, defending the Taliban. If they do decide to bring them to American soil, in what scenario is transporting known terrorists to American soil beneficial. Also the information extracted from the prisoners has been used to counter further terrorist attacks. Information is everything. Limiting the ability to extract that information puts us at more risk.
Though its important for human rights to be observed, I have to ask the question…
If a bomb was threating the white house or another hi-jacked airplane was about to take out a city block killing hundreds, maybe thousands of inocent americans in 2 hours from now, would you really let a bunch of legal rights stop you from getting that information to stop it. Red tape slows things down, and the people who attack your soil know this. Why should you care about the rights of a crimnals when they dont care about yours? Are you really going to let legal or human rights stop you from saving children from being killed by terrorism? I wouldnt!
OBAMA is a “token” all the bleeding hearts are saying wow look what we did we put a black man in Presidential Office. Well now that you have a clear conscience, cleared of past repressions on the Black African American (there are WHITE Africans also for those to closed minded to know) LOOK AT HIS RATINGS!!!!!! THE NOVELTY HAS WORN OFF AND LETS GET RID OF HIM AND GET BACK TO PUTTING OUR COUNTRY BACK IN SHAPE. IMMIGRATION HAS GONE BEYOND FIXING WELL CLOSE THE GODDAMM BOARDERS AND SHOOT THE ONES WHO DEFY IT IM PRETTY SURE WE WILL ONLY HAVE TO SHOOT A FEW AND THE OTHERS WILL THINK TWICE IF SOMEONE DOESNT TAKE HOLD OF THIS COUNTRY IT WONT BE FIT TO LIVE IN. NO JOBS!!! NO MONEY !!! NO HOME!!! WHAT PISSES ME OFF IS THE ONES WHO FUCKED UP THE ECONOMY GOT THE BAIL OUTS AND WE AS AMERICANS HAVE TO PAY FOR IT, IF THIS COUNTRY DOESNT RISE UP AND SAY “NOT MY MONEY!! THEN THE GOVERNMENT WINS….Reagan said and it is truer today than ever…..”In this present crisis, government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.”
Ask doctors what they think of Obama’s health care plan. We should be worried about future QUALITY of care. I question who is going to go into the field of medicine in the future. All of the doctors that I asked said that we will be paying MORE money for the health care plan changes. There needs to be an alternate plan of action.
Close the borders and shoot anyone who defies the walls of isolationism? I am glad your parents made it through that blockade when they immigrated to this continent. Another thing, the Mexicans are probably just trying out that spiffy little trend americans pulled on them during the Vietnam era, when they had to deport Americans hiding out in their country in droves!
Ask the doctors who say healthcare will skyrocket who last helped them purchase their last conference trips to Hawaii, Jamaica, or Monaco. Healthcare is ever so touchy about the cost of practice, yet follows the same pattern as major banks when it comes to bankrolling the administrators’ lofty costs of living.
All of that 8 years of Bush, we still continue to feel his effects of being documented as the worst president in US history. He will also go down as one of the world’s greatest terrorist. He sure did terrorize the world during his terms and did a fine job that is all being blamed on Obama. Guaranteed if McCain would have gotten in office and had to deal with this leftover mess, he wouldn’t have gotten half the gripes that Obama gets, and McCain would’ve put our country in the same awful direction that Bush was taking us. Remember, some things take years to feel the effects. We, as Americans, just want everything here and now. Just wait, if Congress will allow him to do his job, then those effects will be felt by his 2nd term. (or if a Republican is chosen at that time, he will get rewarded with praise from what Obama accomplished. That is what happened to Bush after Clinton’s terms were finished.) No matter what, or who’s in office, I just want good things to happen for the USA and maybe a critic at times, but maybe one that can also help in making change. I won’t ever just “BITCH” about it. Do something positive now for our country and stop spreading this negative energy about our current leader. Never during Bush’ 8 years did I write something to just BITCH about him. I am a DO-er and I will do what I can for our country to thrive! Not just BITCH about it.
here is a president who tries o stay in touch with the people, knows what is needed, cares about the enlisted, has reversed Bush laws that hurt the country and every citizen. Those who criticize him are unfair, biased and ignorant. All one has to do is search the internet for what has been done. Then, compare Bush’s deeds with his side kick,Cheney who should shut up.By the wAY,whatever happened to the friend he shot?
The problem is not Obama or Bush. The real problem is Democrats vs Republicans. Nothing gets done because these two gangs are engaging in a war on each other. They seem to care less and less about OUR NATION, and instead focus on attacking each other. I don’t expect them to agree on everything, but this is getting ridiculous. I want what is best for OUR NATION. Seems that most, probably all, of these poli-tricksters we’ve elected only care about their own personal and party agendas, not what is going to really benefit the US. These people use whatever they can to gain office, then do whatever the can to stay there. I think it has alot to do with the elite status they assume as politicians. Regardless of which color they claim, red or blue, they seem to not care about the opinions and wishes of their boss, the people. They seem to not live in the same America as the rest of us. Most of us should be ashamed for allowing these people, who do not perform the job we hired them to do, to keep their job. We’re broke. Red + Blue needs to = Green, or they both need to be expelled. All they do is pit Americans vs Americans and it sickens me. It is our duty as Americans to monitor and evaluate, regardless which gang you want to claim, all of the officials we have elected. Point is, they do not fear the people as they should, and they’re using us as pawns. America needs to flush the toilet that is Washington.
First off I have to agree that Bush was the worst president in my life time we have had… I was born during the Nixon years…
I have had the same Job for the last 18 years and no it is not due to who was president of the United States…
My primary bitch is… the money spending has to stop… it’s the simple things that piss me off.
How many times has Obama played golf in the last two years… how much does that cost the tax payers and I do repeat tax payers in America.
I make over a 100k year, love to play golf and with my job I have played 4 times in 9 months… and I am not running the fawkin country…
How much is the current first lady’s trip to Spain costing the tax payers? The Obama’s are living a life 99.9% of Americans don’t, why I ask?
It is not their money that gets spent… tax dollars being pissed away just like every thing else the Obama’s do. And the Obama administration does.
The old saying for the USA was send us your poor, hungry and sick… The United States is the land of opportunity.
We help elect the man just like we did Bush for a second term… The economic problem started back in the Clinton days to help tickle the economy…
The Clinton administration gave federal funded mortgage companies an open check book to loan money (Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac).
Who caused that issue, we did… We ran out and bought over priced homes we couldn’t afford… I did but I got out of mine in 2005. Value declines with the value of the dollar now you are upside down in a house! (Owe more money then its true value). How did we survive, we bought junk on credit cards… We lived in a world of credit… Well when the credit is cut off and we have to pay the foolish credit card companies for the junk we bought… we have no more money to buy more junk. Jobs get cut less people buying junk (GM, Ford and Dodge… even the rice burners as well)
Now we have no money to pay the credit card companies and eat… government’s solution… (Hell write them a check with tax dollars)
The credit companies thought process… Its bonus time for our employees.(Tax Payers Dollars) the credit companies use the excuse. “if we don’t give our employees bonuses we will lose them to other companies” the company lost 50 billon dollars the quarter before bonuses are paid and you are giving them bonuses?
WTF?
When did Americans lose their ability to survive? When did this nation, the once greatest nation in the WORLD go wrong?
When we became The Poor, The Hungry and the Desperate… Obama made sure to take care of the sick… and the meth addict with five children from five illegal immigrants’ fathers… Jesus, give birth control to these women… we don’t need abortion; women need to keep their legs closed or at least have safe sex…. You know (AIDS) if contraception is forbidden in your religion isn’t premarital sex as well? And if your married get his nuts cut… gee freakin dumbasses
Ok I am done could go for hours but that’s it for today
Signed…
Pissed Off Tax Payer
Does anyone have any doubt which side the new progressive media is on?
Jason,
Obama has actually cut the cost curve.

Thanks for the mortgage debacle Chris Dodd & Barney Frank. Congress was controlled by the Democrats the last two years of the Bush Admin. Are Frank or Dodd in prison yet? Still making payment on that special low interest loan you got from Countrywide Dodd? Can you say ripoff? Don’t forget who started this entire mess…Please prosecute Dodd & Frank NOW!!!
